Please Join Us in Congratulating Grand Rental Station, LLC as April’s Logan County Chamber Entrepreneur & Business of the Month.
Logan County native, the late Roger L. Watson had entrepreneurship in his blood. Throughout his lifetime, he was responsible for the start -up of numerous successful businesses. Believing that Logan County was an up-and-coming area, he wanted his businesses in the heart of Bellefontaine. His first start-up business was a tax consulting business, Watson & Associates. He had space in his office building and he put it to good use by leasing office space to his long-time friend, John Bush, who owned Bush Electric. Not long after, Roger saw a need within Logan County and quickly jumped at the opportunity. He opened Taylor Rental in 1971 and began renting tools and equipment to local contractors and do-it-yourselfers. In the mid 1980’s, Roger felt that the Taylor Rental Franchise as a whole, was declining. His research uncovered the Grand Rental Franchise and he made a decision to jump ship. This decision proved to be the right one as later the Grand Rental Franchise would purchase the Taylor Rental Franchise. Watson once again, saw an unmet need within Logan County and expanded his rental business to meet that need. They continued to rent quality tools and equipment, but expanded the business to include a wide array of party rentals for weddings, corporate events and private parties. In 1982, Grand Rental Station expanded again opening a new store on State Route 68 in Urbana.
In the early 1990’s, Roger’s son Todd joined the business and the two worked side-by-side to service the needs of both Logan and Champaign Counties. Together, they were responsible for the start-up of Mad River Farm Market located outside of West Liberty. In 2007, with Roger’s passing, the baton was handed from father to son and Todd continued his father’s legacy. In 2015, Todd’s son Chase, joined the business and this multigenerational business continues to offer superior service to the community.
Today, Grand Rental Station’s staff consists of Todd Watson, President; Chase Watson, Party Warehouse Manager; Eric Krebehenne, Bellefontaine Equipment Store Manager; Joe Small, Head Mechanic; Rhonda Wilson, Assistant Manager; Dawn Harr, Party & Event Specialist; and Tyler Ford, Urbana Equipment Store Manager. They also hire up to 20 seasonal event crew members each year.
Local contractors and do-it-yourselfers can rent equipment for just about any job both inside and out. They provide outdoor equipment rentals such as bulldozers, backhoes, lifts, skid steers, automatic nailers, and equipment for sandblasting, plumbing, land-clearing and turf, just to name a few. They also sell bulk black mulch and fill propane tanks. Have a project inside? Grand Rental has you covered there as well. They have generators, floor sanders, wallpaper steamers, light towers, airless paint sprayers and scaffolding. They also have coat racks, easels, and a variety of backdrop kits for businesses to rent.
As for their party rental business, it currently occupies a 40,000 square foot warehouse on Buckingham Avenue. They have a huge selection of tents ranging in size from 10’x10’ to 60’x310’ and everything you need to fill that tent: tables, chairs, china, and a wide variety of linens, as well as concession and catering equipment. Their planning specialists can create a CAD drawing of your event that is to-scale to help you determine the best size tent to fit your need. This is a free service provided, to ensure customer satisfaction. They also offer complimentary site visits to ensure the tent will fit in the area desired and will set the tents ahead of time to give their customers not only peace of mind, but plenty of time to add their own finishing touches. They pride themselves in the personal attention they give to all of their events, no matter the size.
They have been servicing the rental needs of this community for over 47 years and during that time have also invested in the youth of Logan and Champaign County by sponsoring livestock 4-H members. As for their Chamber membership, “We view our membership as an investment in our community and business because we believe in helping make Logan County a better place to live and work.” Todd said. They also appreciate the benefits offered by the Chamber such as the initiative of the “Buy Local” campaign.
We thank Todd Watson and his staff at Grand Rental Station for their 47 years of service to Logan County and for their 23 years of Chamber membership!
